Stuehrmann’s Service Dog Training will be offering group dog obedience classes through the City of Rancho Cucamonga’s Parks and Recreation Department.  Classes will start (DATES FORTHCOMING), and will run for six weeks.  Classes will be held at Central Park, 11200 Base Line Road (north west corner of Milliken and Base Line) on Saturdays from 9:00AM to 10:00AM or 10:00AM to 11:00AM (Course numbers TBD).  Contact the Parks Department at 909-477-2765 for registration information.  Look for our classes to be listed in the City’s Grapevine publication.

BEFORE YOUR FIRST CLASS

Please arrive 15 minutes early to our class area to give your dog time to relieve him/herself and get settled into the working mindset.  You should walk your dog around the area on leash and allow it a few minutes to check out the smells so it will be better focused when starting to work.  Class will begin promptly.  Be ready to work when class begins.  Make sure to keep dogs separated from each other at all times.

PLEASE DO NOT FEED YOUR DOG PRIOR TO CLASS

The required equipment for the class is a flat collar (either nylon or leather), choke chain or prong collar, six-foot leather leash (no chain leashes), and dog treats.  If using a choke chain, it should fit the dog at the dog’s current size and should have approximately two inches of extra chain when made snug around the dog’s neck.  The leather leash can be 1/2 to 3/4 inches wide but does not need to be much wider than that.  Nylon leads can be hard on the hands, especially when working with a large dog.  The dog treats should be soft and easy to break into very, very small bits.

The first class session will go over the equipment and its proper use.  I will ask you to either keep your dog in the car or otherwise confined away from the gathering while we go over the procedures.  The dogs will join in the first class after these instructions are reviewed.

I look forward to working with you and your dog!
